We looked into some clinics near us, and even entertained the idea of going overseas. For now, we’ve decided to go with CNY Fertility. They’re a well-established clinic with locations throughout the country, known for their inclusivity and affordability. Though because of that, they’re also high volume.
We had our first consult over the phone. It was both overwhelming and underwhelming at the same time. The nurse asked us about our medical histories and our goals. She explained how IVF generally works… Sam needs bloodwork and an ultrasound, Eric needs a semen analysis… orders go through the patient portal… the stim cycle will be a stretch of serial ultrasounds and bloodwork… it’ll be a couple weeks from medication to egg retrieval, make the embryos, wait a little, go home… something something about insurance… And that was about it. So much was coming at us that we didn’t even know what to ask. But she also made it sound easy breezy, just with a bunch of steps in between.
A few days later we got an email to schedule a post-consult follow-up call. We just finished that one, and again: overwhelmed and underwhelmed. This time it was the finer logistics. Follicle counts, genetic screening bloodwork, talk with the financing department, pick a start day. And again, that was about it. It felt like we talked through all the things we had to do, but we still don’t understand all the things we had to do.
We’ve read dozens of posts about people’s wonderful experiences with CNY. Loads of success stories and heartfelt appreciations. There are also plenty of people frustrated with how impersonal it can feel, how you really have to advocate for yourself and stay on top of your own care. The jury’s still out for us. To be safe, we’ve decided to check out a local clinic for a second opinion.
