Every year, thousands of Americans travel to another country for IVF. One of the biggest reason to go abroad is cost. The US is among the most expensive places in the world for IVF. A single cycle can run between $15,000 to $25,000. Many destinations offer comparable care for around half the price, even after travel. Some countries are also more open than parts of the US to single women, same-sex couples, and older patients, or have larger, faster donor programs.
But cost isn’t the only thing to weigh, and the sticker price isn’t the real price. Travel, time off, and the likelihood of needing more than one trip all add up, and going abroad means your treatment and your pregnancy happen in different countries, which is its own kind of complicated.
