Before diving into IVF specifics, let’s start with the birds and the bees and talk about conception.
How pregnancy happens and where it can stall
Conception comes down to a chain of four things. You need an egg, you need sperm, the two need a way to meet, and the result needs a healthy place to grow.

When it’s difficult to get pregnant, it’s usually because one of those links isn’t working. An egg isn’t releasing, the sperm isn’t reaching the egg, the path between them is blocked, or the uterus needs support. Often more than one factor is involved, and sometimes we don’t know which it is.
Where IVF fits in
Fertility treatments are basically different ways of addressing a weak link in that chain. Simpler treatments offer a small intervention, like medication to encourage ovulation, or intrauterine insemination (IUI) where a prepared sperm sample is washed and inserted directly into the uterus.
IVF goes the furthest with fertility assistance by addressing the chain more directly, controlling as many variables as technology allows. Eggs are retrieved, sperm is collected and placed in the egg, the first few days of development are in a lab, and then the fertilized egg is placed in the uterus.
Which approach fits best for you is a conversation between you and your doctors.
